The week 3 REU dives had us on the south side of the island, exploring Coral City and Grundy’s Garden. Both sites had some less than pleasant surge, which is to be expected given their easterly situation (towards the windward side of the island) and the higher wave energy propagating north from the central Caribbean, as opposed to the lower wave energy between Cuba and the north side of LCI. Surge asside, the dives were quite pleasant otherwise, and holding to the pattern, the REU mentee’s managed to collect some useful data in spite of the rough conditions.
